Residents of the Swali community in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State have been outraged after a 50-year-old man, Oku Ekanem, was arrested by the state Police Command for allegedly raping the 15-months-old infant daughter of his lover.

Punch reports that Ekanem, an indigene of Akwa Ibom State, was arrested by men of the state’s security outfit, Operation Doo Akpo, after his lover, Blessing Joshua, the mother of the child, caught him red-handed in the act and raised an alarm.
It was gathered that the single mother who is Ekanem's lover, had caught him defiling the toddler at about 1 am on Monday, June 19, 2017, in her house and the incident is said to have provoked serious anger among residents of the area, particularly women lawyers in the state under the auspices of the International Federation of Women Lawyers [FIDA].
Speaking on the shocking discovery, Joshua said:
“It happened on Monday at about 1 am. I was watching the television with my neighbour till late and retired to bed at about that time. It was not quite long when I heard the screams of my child and ran to where the cry was coming from.
But I was shocked when I saw him (Ekanem) defiling my child. He claimed it was the work of the devil and I told him that this would be last time the devil would use him and that I would take the matter seriously.
He pleaded and closed the door to prevent me from calling neighbours. But I tricked him and ran outside with my child to call police patrol team at our junction.
He was arrested but he denied the act. But a test carried out at the hospital showed that the minor was defiled.”
The Chairperson of FIDA in the state, Dise Ogbise Erhisere who confirmed the development, described it as not only barbaric but a ‎wicked act to impede the healthy development of the child.
”It is barbaric and inhuman. We condemn it and call on mothers to be vigilant and careful with their girl child,” Erhisere said.
